At my last annual physical exam my doctor found that I had a very high level of cholesterol. At the time, I didn’t know a lot about cholesterol, but, since he said my numbers were high enough to be dangerous, I though it was time to learn all I could. After a lot of reading and asking questions, I’m now quite familiar with the reasons that your cholesterol level is so important. If you’ll bear with me, I’ll try to show you why getting control of your cholesterol levels is so important to your overall well being. Hopefully, you’ll also see why limiting high cholesterol foods from your diet can be of tremendous benefit to you.

Cholesterol is a vital building block for your body. For our purposes, just understand that it is used by every cell in your body much as a bricklayer uses mortar. Your body also uses it to make bile acids that are used in your intestines.

Your body makes most of the cholesterol it needs in your liver. An enzyme known as low density lipoproteins, or LDL, delivers the cholesterol to your cells. A signal tells the LDL when a cell has enough cholesterol, and it just moves on.

Extra cholesterol can’t be carried back by the LDL, and that’s when the problems start. The extra cholesterol is deposited on the inner wall of an artery by the LDL. Eventually, these deposits will begin to choke off the blood flow and “starve” organs that are down the line. This is a major cause of strokes and heart attacks.

I understand that this article is very basic. I only wish to get you thinking about your own cholesterol levels.
