Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht was a pleasure craft used mostly by royalty and secondly by the burghers on the canals and the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing yachts was incidental, borne from private games. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his restoration to the English throne in 1660, the city of Amsterdam gave him a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), ordered for more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 bet. Yachting was found to be fashionable with the rich and royalty, but after that point the trend did not last.

The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and held great naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club went on, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after joining with other societies, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some ordered manner on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to the throne in 1820, it came to be called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht organisation had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing setting of British racing. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the rise of George IV. All members were required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for great bets were held, and the social life was superlative. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to over 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and persisted when the English held control. Sailing was largely for fun and reached its epitome in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which sailed on the Mediterranean Sea and established a minimum of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. Early sailing yachts followed the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through the later half of the 19th century. The design of sizeable yachts was first largely affected by the success of America, which was created by George Steers for a syndicate started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its success at Cowes in 1851. Earlier yachts were not designed and manufactured in the modern sense, with only a model being used. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come about. Not until the 1920s did the use of the research of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what it had done earlier for hulls.

Because nearly all sailboats were individually custom-built, there arose a desire for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were made. Thus, a rating rule came into being, which is found in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and revised in 1919. Today, one of the rapidly flourishing areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to the same dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between such boats can be done on an even keel with no handicapping necessary. A prime example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class adopted for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

As long as yachting was an activity largely for the nobility and the wealthy, cost was no object, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The promotion and preference of smaller boats occurred in the second half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the value of small yachts. Following this in the 20th century, for the larger part after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure boats became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a preferred training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were setting sail single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Post the decade 1840–50, during which steam began to take the place of sail power in market vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed more and more in personal yachts. Large power yachts were furthered to a high degree, and long-distance travel was a fond occupation of the wealthy. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then made way to boats powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. Like naval and merchant craft, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht fashion for a number of years. By the later half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were only power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.

From the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the construction of more sizeable steam yachts. Notably among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of at least 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service in World War II.

As bigger and better quality internal-combustion engines were created, many big yachts began using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, progressed in World War I. During the decade following that, bigger power-yacht creation blossomed, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that period the largest auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

In considering the economic purposes of taxation, it is essential to differentiate between several concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates will be dictated in legislation; often these are marginal rates, but occasionally they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates indicate the fraction of incremental income taken by taxation when income is increased by one dollar. Thus, if tax liability increases by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax regulations usually contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that grow as income grows. Heavy analysis of marginal tax rates need to take into account provisions as well as the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) declines by 20 cents for each one-dollar increase in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than nominated in the statutory rates. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income changes in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the important ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to realise the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, since it may depend on considerations such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem determines that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates display the portion of total income that is demanded in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate grows with income. Average income tax rates usually grow with income, both because personal allowances are provided for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received mostly by high-income households might dampen these effects, allowing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that decrease as income grows.

The Development of Data Projectors

The LCDs put in projection systems are usually small reflective or transmissive panels lit by a powerful arc lamp source. A line of lenses magnifies the reflected or transmitted image and then sends it on the screen. In front-projection systems the LCD is located on the same side of the screen as the viewer, while in rear-projection systems the screen is illuminated from behind. Projectors of greater cost and capacity can be found with three separated LCD panels, forming separate red, green, and blue images that come together to create a coloured display on the screen.

The growing requirement for pictographic presentations has granted a growth in emphasis on the switching speed of liquid crystals. This has required the manufacture of objects employing smectic liquid crystals, certain types of which possess a speedier electro-optical response than nematic liquid crystals. The surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) display is at this time the most developed smectic device. In it the liquid crystal molecules are set out in layers that are perpendicular to the substrate planes, which are separated by one or two micrometres, and inside the layers the molecules are on a slant, as illustrated in the figure. The host liquid crystal has optically active molecules, and a scarcely perceptible result of the optical activity and the angle of the molecules is the appearance of a permanent charge separation, or ferroelectric dipole, analogous to the ferromagnetic dipole of a magnet. The direction of this dipole is perpendicular to the tilt direction of the molecules and in the plane of the layers. Therefore, there must be a permanent charge separation across the liquid crystal layer in the SSFLC, and its sign is directly coupled to the tilt direction of the molecules. An applied voltage of the right sign can reverse the direction of this dipole in tens of microseconds and in so doing reverse the tilt direction of the molecules. The resultant change in optical properties can cause a change from light to dark if or when one or more polarizers are employed.

SSFLC devices have been produced for big passive-matrix displays, but their high cost and complex detail has prevented them from creating any significant impact on the market. Small transmissive and reflective active-matrix SSFLC displays, however, have shown some promise for use as elements in projection systems or as viewfinders in digital cameras. Their immediate responding allows them to be employed in time-sequential colour systems, in which highly expensive colour filters are emulated by a coloured backlight that flashes red, green, and blue in rapid pulsing (about 100 cycles in a second). For example, the liquid crystal could be switched to a transmissive state in the red and green periods and to a nontransmissive state in the blue period, displaying the result that the eye sees an average of red and green light, or the colour yellow.
